What Comes After Microservices? Maybe Better Boundaries

People like naming the next big architecture style.

Monolith. SOA. Microservices. Serverless. Event-driven. Mesh. Edge. Agentic systems.

The next step may not be a new label.

It may be better boundaries.

Most architecture pain comes from poor boundaries: unclear domains, shared data ownership, hidden dependencies, leaky APIs, mixed responsibilities, and teams stepping on each other.

Whether the system is a monolith, microservice estate, event-driven platform, or serverless workflow, bad boundaries will hurt.

AI may make this more visible.

If AI tools analyse codebases, tickets, logs, and schemas, they may help identify coupling, ownership gaps, and unstable interfaces.

But they will not decide the business boundaries for us.

That still requires human judgement.

Maybe the future of architecture is less about chasing the next pattern and more about getting the old fundamentals right: cohesion, coupling, ownership, resilience, data integrity, and changeability.

Not trendy. Necessary.
