We Need Better Words Than “Digital Transformation”
“Digital transformation” has become too vague.
It can mean replacing paper forms. It can mean cloud migration. It can mean automation. It can mean analytics. It can mean AI. It can mean a new website. It can mean consultants in a boardroom.
When a phrase means everything, it starts meaning nothing.
Companies should be more specific.
Are we reducing manual capture?
Are we shortening customer turnaround time?
Are we improving reporting accuracy?
Are we exposing APIs?
Are we modernising legacy systems?
Are we reducing operational risk?
Are we enabling new products?
Each goal needs different work.
The danger of broad transformation language is that it hides accountability. Everyone agrees with the slogan, but nobody agrees on the target.
Technology change is hard enough without foggy language.
Say what is changing. Say why. Say who benefits. Say how success will be measured.
Then build.
