The Return of the Modular Monolith

The modular monolith is having a quiet comeback.

Not because microservices failed. Because teams are becoming more honest about cost.

A modular monolith offers clear internal boundaries without distributed-system overhead. It can enforce domain separation while keeping deployment simpler. It can be a strong starting point for products that have not yet earned microservice complexity.

This matters especially for small and medium teams.

Not every business needs dozens of services, service mesh, distributed tracing, complex CI/CD, and multiple databases. Sometimes what they need is clean modules, disciplined interfaces, good tests, and a database designed properly.

The trick is discipline.

A modular monolith without enforced boundaries becomes a mudball. A modular monolith with clear ownership can be excellent.

The future may not be monolith versus microservices.

It may be staged architecture: start modular, observe pressure, extract only when the boundary proves it needs independence.

That feels less fashionable. It also feels more sensible.
