Event Streams Are Business History, Not Just Technical Plumbing

An event stream is often treated as infrastructure.

Topics. Producers. Consumers. Offsets. Retries. Schemas.

That is all necessary.

But the deeper value is history.

An event stream records what happened in the business: order created, payment authorised, refund requested, shipment delayed, user verified, stock adjusted.

If designed well, it becomes a timeline of business facts.

That opens useful possibilities: audit trails, replay, analytics, integration, anomaly detection, and system recovery.

If designed badly, it becomes a pipe full of vague messages nobody trusts.

The naming matters. The schema matters. The ownership matters. The versioning matters. The business meaning matters.

“CustomerUpdated” is rarely enough. What changed? Why? Who initiated it? Is this a correction, a preference change, a compliance update, or a system sync?

Events should be specific enough to be useful later.

Technical plumbing moves data. Business events preserve meaning.
