Concern: We Are Automating Before We Understand

There is a dangerous pattern in technology adoption.

A process is slow.

Nobody fully understands why.

Someone proposes automation.

The automation preserves the confusion, but faster.

AI makes this easier.

A company can automate replies before fixing support quality. Generate reports before agreeing on metrics. Classify requests before defining ownership. Summarise meetings before improving decisions.

Automation should come after understanding, not before it.

The correct sequence is boring: map the process, remove unnecessary steps, define ownership, clarify rules, then automate what remains.

If you automate a bad process, you may make it harder to see.

This is one of the reasons I remain both optimistic and cautious about AI. It can remove real friction. It can also become a very expensive way to avoid thinking.

The question should not be “Can we automate this?”

The first question should be “Should this process exist in this form?”
