A Small Prediction: AI Will Make Documentation Valuable Again

Documentation has always been one of the most disliked parts of software development.

Not because it is useless. Because it goes stale.

Developers write it after the real work is done. Business users rarely read it. New team members do not trust it. Eventually, everyone asks the one senior developer who “just knows how it works.”

AI may change this.

Not by magically fixing discipline, but by lowering the cost of keeping knowledge usable.

Imagine documentation that is partly generated from code, commits, tickets, database schemas, API contracts, incidents, and architecture decision records. Imagine asking a system, “Why does this process work this way?” and getting an answer linked back to the original decision, the current code, and the relevant support cases.

That would be a serious shift.

But there is a catch. AI cannot document what a team never decided clearly. It cannot infer intent reliably from chaos. It can summarise mess, but it cannot turn bad process into good architecture.

My prediction: teams with decent discipline will get a huge documentation advantage from AI. Teams without discipline will generate more words, not more clarity.
